Ilona Gerbakher
Ilona Gerbakher is a graduating senior majoring in Middle Eastern and North African Studies Studies, and is pursuing College Honors. She has worked as an Undergraduate Research Fellow and a Waingrow Honors Scholar at UCLA, where she has undertaken research into the role of women in comparative Jewish and Islamic jurisprudence. Her work on women in Islamic law has been published in Aleph, the UCLA undergraduate journal of research in the humanities, and has been presented at local, regional and national academic conferences. She will be spending this summer studying classical Arabic at the Harvard Divinity School, where she will begin graduate studies as a fall 2011 Presidential Scholar. She is immensely grateful for the intellectual opportunities that she has received at UCLA, and is proud to be a lifelong Bruin at heart.
