The Undergraduate Research Center–Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (URC-HASS) often seeks Graduate Research Mentors for the academic year, quarter, or summer. If you are interested, please contact the URC-HASS for more information about current openings.
Graduate Research Mentors offer mentoring and tutorial services to UCLA undergraduates interested or enrolled in research courses, scholarships, fellowships, and other programming administered by the Undergraduate Research Centers.
Activities may include:
- Conducting group tutorial sessions, including workshops on getting involved in research, writing personal statements, writing research abstracts and proposals, and preparing oral and poster presentations.
- Conducting individual tutorial sessions with undergraduates involved in or seeking to become involved in undergraduate research.
- Developing workshops and programming for undergraduates involved in Undergraduate Research Center courses and scholarship programs.
- Assisting with the development and support of the Aleph undergraduate research journal for the humanities and social sciences.
- Contributing to Undergraduate Research Center outreach programs.
Eligibility Criteria:
- UCLA graduate student, preferably a PhD student in the humanities, arts, or social sciences who has completed a minimum of one year of graduate school at UCLA.
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and enrolled in a minimum of 12 units each quarter.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Making normal progress toward the graduate degree, as outlined by Graduate Division/departmental guidelines.
- Sincere interest in working with and assisting undergraduates, particularly those who are interested in a research/academic career.
- Able to work 1-8 hours per week. Graduate students already holding 50% appointments as academic apprentice personnel or other positions on campus may be eligible to work additional hours over 50% time (20 hours/week) as a Graduate Research Mentor with approval from the student’s home academic department through the exception process.
- This position is subject to the UCLA Graduate Division Academic Apprentice Personnel Manual policies including the ASE maximum length of employment policy .
MELLON MAYS UNDERGRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM REPRESENTATIVES
The Undergraduate Research Center–Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (URC-HASS) often seeks Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program Representatives for the academic year. If you are interested, please contact the URC-HASS for more information about current openings.
The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) is a two-year research program for undergraduates who would like to pursue a PhD and a career in the academy (http://mmuf.org/). The mission of MMUF is to diversify the professoriate by increasing the number of faculty from underrepresented groups and also by supporting those with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities in higher education.
Major duties of the MMUF Program Representatives include conducting group and individual meetings and workshops with MMUF students, as well as assisting in coordinating MMUF outreach initiatives, media initiatives, and events celebrating MMUF student research.
Activities may include:
- Conducting individual meetings and information sessions with undergraduates involved in or seeking to become involved in the MMUF program
- Representing the UCLA MMUF program at outreach events
- Developing and conducting group meetings for MMUF students with regard to MMUF program goals, graduate school preparation, and professional and academic development
- Assisting MMUF students with summer research and graduate school applications and logistics
- Assisting MMUF students with applications and logistics for upcoming conferences
- Preparing and producing MMUF event and meeting materials
- Assisting program directors with developing content for URC-administered courses associated with the MMUF program
- Tracking MMUF student participation and progress with regard to program goals and requirements
- Assisting with coordinating logistics for MMUF events, including the MMUF Welcome Reception, End-of-Year Dinner, and MMUF participation in Undergraduate Research Week
Eligibility Criteria
- UCLA graduate student, preferably a Ph.D. student in the humanities, arts, or social sciences who has completed a minimum of one year of graduate school at UCLA
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and enrolled as a UCLA graduate student during each quarter of appointment
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Making normal progress toward the graduate degree as outlined by Graduate Division/departmental guidelines
- Sincere interest in working with and assisting undergraduates, particularly those who are interested in a research/academic career
- Able to work 4-8 hours per week (up to 20% time). Graduate students already holding 50% appointments as academic apprentice personnel or other positions on campus may be eligible to work additional hours over 50% time (20 hours/week) as a graduate mentor with approval from the student’s home academic department through the exception process.

MMUF Graduate Research Mentors offer mentoring and tutorial services to visiting undergraduates who are part of the UCLA Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Writing and Research Training Program. Twenty current Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows from participating Mellon Mays colleges and universities attend the program. The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (http://www.mmuf.org/) aims to diversify the professoriate by increasing the number of faculty from underrepresented groups and by supporting those with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities in higher education.
Activities may include:
- Conducting group tutorial sessions, including workshops on writing research abstracts and proposals, writing personal statements, creating oral and poster presentations, and preparing for graduate school
- Conducting individual tutorial sessions with program participants to work on writing skills
- Developing programming and workshops to accompany the writing and research course in which all participants will be enrolled and working closely with the course instructor(s)
- Assisting with the development and support of the Writing and Research Training Program
- Contributing to URC-HASS outreach programs to academic departments, faculty, graduate students, and other Division of Undergraduate Education units

- UCLA graduate student, preferably a Ph.D. student in the humanities, arts, or social sciences who has completed a minimum of one year of graduate school at UCLA

- Sincere interest in working with and assisting undergraduates, particularly those who are interested in a research/academic career
- Able to work 20-30 hours per week for the duration of the 7-week appointment (summer session A and one week prior).
- Preferred: experience teaching writing at UCLA (e.g., ESL, EngComp 3, or departmental Writing II course)
