Sonia Meroian

Sonia Meroian is a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in political science with a concentration on international relations. Through the development of a co-optation model and an extensive overview of the affairs between China’s state apparatus and members of the country’s private sector, she seeks to investigate the cause of China’s non-democratized status. Her research incorporates analysis from the year 1979 and onward with a special focus on the conduct of the Chinese Communist Party under Xi Jinping. Moving forward, she hopes to incorporate her findings into the drafting of future policy-research concerning Sino-American affairs.

Prior to her transfer to UCLA, Sonia served as the President (2020-2021) and Political Affairs Senator (2020) of Los Angeles Mission College’s “Associated Student Organization.” She is the “All-Armenian Students’ Association” Advisor for the 2022-2023 academic year– an organization that seeks to represent and advocate for the Armenian student population in Southern California. Previously, she had participated in the “UCLA Global Internship Program” during the summer of 2022 with the London-based organization “Action on Armed Violence,” for which she conducted research.
