Kelsey Takaha

Kelsey Takaha is a fourth-year (second-year transfer) student double majoring in Communication and Gender Studies. She is particularly interested in interpersonal communication and, consequently, the effects dyadic relations have on an individual’s identity development. Under the mentorship of Professor Steve Peterson, she studies the intersection of nonverbal communication amidst the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her research investigates the effects of wearing facemasks on one’s perceived sense of friendliness and approachability in dyadic interactions. By employing survey methods, she researches the effects this health preventative measure has on socialization, communicative styles, and any resulting mental health implications such as self-esteem, identity development, and social perception amongst children, adolescents, and young adults. Beyond her departmental honors research, Kelsey works as a coordinator for STOMP (student transfer outreach and mentor program), participates on the outreach committee in the Alumni Scholars Club, and volunteers with School on Wheels.
