Grant Pate

Grant Pate is a fourth-year undergraduate from Walnut Creek, California double-majoring in political science and history. Grant is conducting a senior honors thesis on what is known as the “Romanian channel,” a top-secret line of communication that President Richard Nixon used to organize his seminal visit to China in 1972. This project not only sheds light on an area of history previously not focused on, but also speaks to the impact of diplomatic methods, including secrecy at the highest levels, the use of intermediaries, and top-level bargaining to help provide an understanding of how the world may aspire towards a more perpetual peace, or away from it. Moreover, the project means Grant gets to do exciting things like travel and archival research! Outside of school, Grant is a vinyl record collector and rock and classical enthusiast, a frequent solo traveler, and an avid reader. After graduation, Grant hopes to immediately enter graduate school to prepare him for a career as a civil servant.
