Clara Nguyen

Clara Do Tran Nguyen is the daughter of South Vietnamese refugees and is pursuing a senior honors thesis in Asian American Studies. Her passions lie in community health and healing, mental health advocacy, and cross-cultural medicine. For this reason, Clara is studying to finish a dual degree in Human Biology and Society and Asian American Studies. During her time at UCLA, she has worked with various service organizations, served as a Resident Assistant, and even performed traditional dance at the annual Vietnamese Culture Night. Her wide range of interests has given her the opportunity to pursue research with intersectionality and culture in mind.

Clara’s research project examines the labor and work of Southeast Asian nail salon workers through an artistic and creative lens. She seeks to understand how the industry has changed over several generations and how the opinions and views of those who belong to the line of work have shifted in accords to nationality, mental health, and belonging. To display the stories of the community, Clara compiles oral histories and pictures to place in a photo gallery. The visual representation symbolizes the artistry, skill, and identities that comprise the nail salon industry as well as the Southeast Asian American community in southern California.
