Ching Hong Brian Yeung
Ching Hong Brian Yeung is a fourth-year UCLA undergraduate from Hong Kong, majoring in History with concentrations in Education and Public Affairs. His senior honors thesis, titled “The Awakening ‘Hongkongers’: A History of Identity Cultivation in Hong Kong Education,” explores the cultural and political influence of the Hong Kong education system on the development of local identity since the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration. He indicates that the thesis is not just a study of the historical role of civic education in the emergence of “Hongkonger” identity. In a world in which individuals’ identities are constantly being targeted for manipulation by the powers that be, the thesis is also a reminder of the role of education in that process. Outside of school, Brian enjoys stand-up comedy, films, music, strength training, and basketball. After graduation, he hopes to join a graduate program that allows him to explore global history through the lenses of education, philosophy, and politics. Ultimately, Brian aims to create a quality international K-12 education program or academy that is affordable, accessible, and focuses on liberal arts education and technological literacy.
