Evan Sakuma
Evan is a junior-transfer from Pasadena City College majoring in American Literature and Culture and minoring in Asian American Studies at UCLA. Under the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellowship, their research seeks to explores the performativity of queer bodies of color within contemporary literature; in particular, they examines how Asian-American playwrights Chay Yew and Nathan Ramos situate and script actors’ bodies in their respective plays, A Language of Their Own and As We Babble On. By placing queer of color critique in conversation with Asian-American performance theorists such as Ju Yon Kim and Lucy Burns, they hope to approach the asociality of queer Asian-American bodies as a performance in itself. Evan hopes that in the completion of their research it will contribute to the normalization of asociality as a tool to understand queer Asian-Asian being.
