Abeeha Hussain
Abeeha Hussain is a second–year transfer (fourth–year) double majoring in Political Science and Labor Studies. Being a first-generation Pakistani–American in a post-9/11 world made her consistently curious about the way her peers and surroundings perceived immigration. Her research focuses on the immigrant application of Linked Fate and Group Consciousness in a Los Angeles immigrant community context. She hopes to point towards a connection between the way xenophobia, media representation, and important political climates impact immigrants and their perceived linked fate with other immigrants. Through her year–long Political Science departmental honors thesis, she’ll get the opportunity to speak with immigrants of Black and Latinx backgrounds to curate her thesis. She hopes to explore the intersection of the racialization of immigration, countries of origin, migration, and globalization and to gain a greater understanding of how individuals’ experiences, culture, and environment influence their self–perception and community involvement. Hussain plans on working with immigrants and higher education policy beyond her time at UCLA and hopes to use this research as a catalyst towards emphasizing the need for access to higher education amongst immigrant communities in California.
