Milagro Jones

Milagro Jones is a formerly homeless, formerly incarcerated single father. He came to Los Angeles in 2018 with 40 dollars, two carryon bags, and a threeyearold daughter, fleeing domestic violence and child abuse. Through the resilient powers of faith, hope, and love, Milagro transformed himself from an unemployed resident of the Union Rescue Mission in Skid Row to an English Major at UCLA. His research is focused on the premise that gang literature is literature. He is focusing on Asian American and African American literary cultural exchange in Black Disciple rapper Chief Keef’s mixtape The Glory Road created in collaboration with Japanese producer DJ Kenn Aeon. By putting this mixtape in conversation with the English Epic Beowulf, Milagro Jones hopes to humanize modern literature produced by gang members while serving as an example of how a former gang member can create representation in academic scholarship.
