Angela Rey
Angela Rey is a fourth-year transfer student from San Francisco majoring in Global Jazz Studies. Before transferring to UCLA in 2019, she attended City College of San Francisco, where there were resources for underrepresented students like her to ensure that all students had a chance to meet their academic goals despite whatever financial, social, or physical barriers may arise. As a Cuban-Filipina-American, having access to the Latinx and Filipinx resource centers at CCSF was not only key to Angela’s academic accomplishments, but it also helped her create a community of people that looked like her and came from similar backgrounds.
Outside of school, Angela was exposed to the different musical, ethnic, and political communities of San Francisco, where she learned about the intersectional needs of the different communities around her and the resources provided for them. It was through her experiences in the Bay Area that she learned the importance of institutional support and the correlation it has with social engagement and academic success. When Angela transferred to UCLA, she was shocked to find that a resource center dedicated to the needs of the Latinx and Black student bodies didn’t already exist. So, with the support of her faculty mentor Dr. Arturo O’Farrill, Angela decided to research and establish UCLA’s first Latinx resource center to not only provide resources for Latinx students, but also to serve as a community center. This center, that Angela named Osos Unidos, will ensure that Latinx needs are met while unifying and empowering the Latinx population on and off campus. Although UCLA announced in the summer of 2020 that they will be establishing a Black resource center, which was part of Angela’s initial project proposal, she will be holding the university accountable for their promise while establishing Osos Unidos.
