Alexandra Mazmanian
Alexandra Mazmanian is a fourth-year studying Sociology. For her honors thesis, she conducts research through qualitative research methods, namely ethnographic and semi-structured interviews, inspired by “A Theory of Shopping” (Miller, 2013). To do her research, she grocery shops with members of the zero-waste community. Consumer purchasing for zero waste members is not as simple as just tossing something into the grocery cart. With so many processed foods and even produce wrapped in plastic, the grocery store becomes a complex place to navigate. More importantly, there are times when zero waste members will purchase products that are not zero waste. By asking conversational questions about why they chose that particular item, she can better understand the compromises and justifications they make, especially since the grocery shoppers are purchasing items for their households, which may include a spouse, friends, or children. Because the average zero waste member identifies as a millennial woman, and is typically white and of middle-to-upper socioeconomic status, the interview methodology provides valuable insights into consumer behavior.
