PwintPhyu Nandar

I am PwintPhyu Nandar, currently a 4th year Environmental Science major with a concentration in Environmental Systems and Society. I was born in Burma (now Myanmar) and attended some schooling in Singapore, before moving to the Bay Area in California. As such, I largely identify as a Southeast Asian immigrant. Despite being grounded in my Burmese and Southeast Asian roots, I did not realize how much my immigrant identity affected me until my 3rd year at UCLA. I have always been involved in Southeast Asian student groups on campus, but it wasn’t until I met Burmese students who were born here or grew up in Burma that the importance of my immigrant identify became clear. Around this time, I was an Undergraduate Research Scholar for Sustainable LA Grand Challenges. This opportunity allowed me to conduct my own personal research with the help of my faculty mentor, Dr. Jessica Cattelino, and the research group, the Gender and Water Project, which she oversaw. Conducting my own research actually allowed me to better understand the significance of immigration in identity. As such, I am expanding the research from last year today for my honors research project.
