Michael Holmes
Michael Holmes was born in Los Angeles California on September 27 1986. Coming from a single parent household, and in a community where young men join gangs more than they join college, many assumed that Michael would be another inner city statistic. However, because of the determination of his mother to see him succeed, and the positive role models that reached out to him, Michael developed a desire to gain knowledge and use it to elevate him above the obstacles that trap so many in the community he grew up in. Michael now studies philosophy at UCLA and is currently doing research in social philosophy, examining the notion of “social groups”. In the long standing debate in philosophy and sociology concerning the nature of social groups , some say a new thing that is created when individuals come together (namely, the group)—others think that the thing we call the “group” can be explained entirely in terms of the individuals. Michael’s interest in this discussion has to do with how we identify groups—in other words, Michael addresses the question, “what is the relevant social group?” When, in other words, is it more relevant to the identity of the group that the members who comprise it are black, than that they are males? Is there even an answer to such a question? Michael hopes to address these issues in a way that will make a long lasting contribution to the field.
