Umika Kumar
Umika Kumar is a fourth year and transfer student majoring in Sociology. She is a Regents scholar, Tau Sigma Honor Society scholar, Regents Scholar Society executive board member and Research Assistant for Dr. Edward Walker’s current research project on corporate political accountability. Previously, she was a Research Assistant for the Patterns and Perceptions of Marijuana and Tobacco Use project, supervised by Dr. William McCarthy through the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. At De Anza College, which she attended from 2015-2017, she was the Outreach Director for 1500 Stories—a nonprofit focused on understanding class in the United States—as well as an active member of her campus advocacy community and a De Anza College Public Policy School Fellow. Her current research focuses on first generation Indian Americans as seen through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. She is interested in political sociology, migration, and race/ethnicity, and hopes to be a professor of sociology someday. She is incredibly grateful to have received the Rosalind W. Alcott Scholarship for her research.
