Sophia Luo
Sophia Luo is a third-year linguistics major from Vancouver, Canada. She was first introduced to the field of linguistics in Grade 10, through the works of Professor J. R. R. Tolkien. Sophia’s current research investigates polar question constructions in languages and dialects of China and its surrounding regions. This project is inspired by courses in syntax and historical linguistics, as well as a puzzling pattern in her native dialect of Mandarin. Under the mentorship of Professor David Goldstein, she aims to give an account of the typological distribution of different constructions, and to explore how these distributional patterns can inform current theories regarding the internal classification of the Sinitic language family. After graduation, Sophia plans to pursue a PhD in linguistics.
