Ava Cazares
Ava Cazares is a fourth-year majoring in Psychology with an Education Studies Minor. Her research project examines Spanish-English Dual-Language Immersion (DLI) programs and the instructional reforms for cultural preservation that they provide for students of Latinx heritage. Born and raised in Riverside, CA, a predominately Latinx community, she was inspired by the cultural and lingual assets that have enriched both her upbringing and my education, which is reflected in her research. Taking place at the UCLA Community School, her project will interview Latinx elementary school students about their understanding of their culture, familial background, and experiences in DLI classrooms. With special attention to cultural conservation and competency in educational spaces, Ava’s project seeks to unpack the value of biliteracy and bilingualism as it pertains to Latinx identities.
