Andrew Avila
Andrew Michael Avila is a fourth-year transfer student majoring in World Arts and Cultures pursuing college and departmental research. With his senior focus and undergraduate research, he has had the opportunity to combine his interests within design and sustainability. His project critiques current forms of fashion apparel and modes of production through the lens of fashion apparel design. His research offers solutions to some of the industry’s most pressing issues, centering largely on topics of sustainability and unethical modes of production. He hopes that his project, and subsequent research, will contribute to the field of fashion apparel design by influencing the industry to alter their approach towards design and modes of production altogether. He believes that current design is inherently flawed, as it seeks to address issues of the present, and therefore must undergo a shift to address the needs of the future. His plan, post-graduation, is to pursue a master’s degree within the department of World Arts and Cultures, and to subsequently enter the field of design in an effort to change industry standards for fashion apparel.
