Sarahy Torres
Sarahy is a low-income, first-generation Latina from Oxnard, CA. She majors in Chicana/o and Central American Studies and Education and Social Transformation. Her research interests include racial geography, spatial geography, critical race theory, K-16 education, migrant education, and farmworker movements. As a Keck fellow, she focuses on the accessibility of resources farmworkers in Oxnard have access to based on where they live. She is specifically interested in the food resources they can access and how they mobilize to get them. She seeks to show the disparities farmworkers face concerning resources and housing. Sarahy plans to attend graduate school to become a professor. After graduating with a doctorate and becoming a professor, she wants to implement grant-based funding in her community to increase access to resources and help first-generation students of color get into and persist in higher education.
