Emma Horio
Emma Horio is a fourth-year English major with an interest in American literature, the Victorian era, the medical or psychoanalytic gaze, and representations of gender and sexuality in fiction. Her thesis examines how the sensationalist literature craze of the 1860s influenced or revealed existing societal attitudes and anxieties pertaining to human sexuality in Victorian America. By analyzing literary representations of non-normative sexualities that were often later pathologized by medical professionals, she hopes to underscore the importance of the literary sphere in the creation of discourse around sexuality. Beyond her research, Emma is also an editor at the Daily Bruin, UCLA’s student newspaper, and media relations chair for UCLA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After graduating, she hopes to continue her research in a Ph.D. program.
