Hannah Chua

Hannah Dominica Chua (she/they) is a fourth-year transfer student pursuing a degree in World Arts and Cultures and a minor in Pilipinx Studies. Their research project employs an alternative exhibition and series of art activations to interrogate individual and collective Pilipinx diasporic identity formation by deconstructing the nostalgic attachments to household food commodities and multinational restaurant franchises, like Jollibee. Their project aims to raise and problematize the connections between diasporic identity, nostalgia, and global capitalism. By employing a socially engaged arts practice, they hope to build upon critical initiatives and dialogues that have allowed the Pilipinx American diaspora to foster new relationships to Pilipinx identity, culture, and community. Hannah’s project aligns with their passions in arts education, youth outreach, and grassroots community organizing. They are a firm proponent of the transformative potential of the arts and visual storytelling as a tool for radical change and community building.
