Isabel Qi

Isabel Qi is a fourth year student at UCLA double majoring in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences and Geography. During her time at UCLA she has been involved in the Association of Chinese Americans, Chinese American Culture Night, the Renewable Energy Association and the Grand Challenges Undergraduate Research Scholars Program. For her senior thesis, she is studying the Tianjin-Binhai Eco-city under the guidance of Professor Helga Leitner. Tianjin-Binhai Eco-city is a collaborative project between the Chinese and Singaporean governments to build a city that incorporates green buildings, public housing, extensive public transportation, and street design that requires less driving. More specifically, she is investigating what kind of barriers there are for planning agencies and architecture firms to meet these sustainability goals and what kind of support the government is putting in to make these goals more attainable. Upon graduating, Isabel plans to attend graduate school to study Urban Planning. She was inspired to pursue Urban Planning as a field of study because she is interested in the relationship between the built environment and nature, and how alternative designs in the built environment can decrease the carbon footprint of cities. Isabel would like to thank her mentor Professor Helga Leitner for her guidance, and the Webster family for their support for her research.
