Shiyang Lu
My name is Shiyang Lu. I am a fourth year undergraduate student completing two majors in psychology and in linguistics (with a specialization of computing). I have been working in a research lab setting since Fall of 2015 studying children’s language acquisition. I will be conducting a research on children’s memory and categorization bias with Dr. Catherine Sandhofer for this academic year. Following graduation, I would like to continue studying children’s language learning processes and pursue a graduate degree in developmental psychology. Previous studies have shown that children develop a shape bias during the second year of life, where they tend to generalize object categories based on objects’ shape instead of other perceptual features. In this proposed project, we intend to examine the relationship between children’s memory of different perceptual information and their categorization bias. Will their memory for shape feature improve when their shape bias develops? What is the temporal relationship between these two developments? If we are able to answer this question, we can better understand the underlying mechanism of children’s (even adults’) formation of categories, and thus have a better understanding of children’s learning.
