Talin Popovic

Hello, my name is Talin Popovic. I am a fourth-year student at UCLA double majoring in History and Classics. My current studies focus on ancient history and languages, specifically Latin, Greek, and Armenian. Currently, I am working with Professor David Phillips on an honors thesis looking at references to the Persian Wars in Attic oratory during the Macedonian invasion of Greece. For information on the Persian Wars, I am reading authors like Herodotus and Plato, and for oratory during the Macedonian invasion, Demosthenes, Hypereides, Aeschines, and others. I am identifying references, both concrete and ideological, between players, events, and ideas between the two. I will consider the rhetorical purposes for including these references and what their inclusion indicates about Athenian cultural consciousness. I will also compare linguistic components in the original Ancient Greek texts to determine if certain words came to be associated with certain ideas in the Athenian mind. With my research, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of this period of Greek history and contribute to the current scholarship on Attic oratory.
