Student Research Program (SRP)

UCLA’s Student Research Program (SRP 99) assists undergraduates in obtaining research and creative skills, in defining academic interests and objectives, and in becoming part of the larger university research community. SRP is designed as an entry-level experience and allows undergraduates early in their academic careers to participate in research and creative inquiry or engage in scholarly efforts under the direction of a faculty mentor.

Students receive 1 unit of credit for 3-5 hours of work per week or 2 units for 6-10 hours of work per week. Students in the College may take up to 10 units of SRP 99 credit during their undergraduate careers. Only 6 of those SRP 99 units will count towards graduation; once students have completed 6 SRP 99 units, they may enroll in an additional 4 SRP units without credit applied toward the degree. Each student can only submit one SRP 99 contract per quarter.

Student Eligibility

Must be in good academic standing.
Must be enrolled in at least 12 units (before SRP 99 units) with full-time status, with the exception of summer quarter.
If enrolled in over 19 units (including SRP 99 units), students must submit a petition to the appropriate counseling unit to go over the unit max. This petition must be approved before the SRP 99 contract is submitted.
Students working with faculty mentors who have UCLA Environment, Health & Safety chemical licenses must have completed the Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts class before enrolling in an SRP 99 course (see below). Students who need to take the course will see a notation on their SRP 99 contract under their faculty mentor’s name.

Faculty Confirmation

SRP 99 contracts must be physically or electronically signed. Faculty who are not able to physically or electronically sign contracts may email confirmation to the Undergraduate Research Center for Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at urhass@college.ucla.edu. The confirmation must include the student’s name, UID, and contract number.
Students enroll in SRP 99 contract courses by submitting their signed SRP 99 contracts (available on MyUCLA) to the Undergraduate Research Center via Message Center by 4:30 p.m. on the Friday of second week for fall 2026, winter 2027, and spring 2027. Summer 2026 contracts are due by 12pm on Thursday, July 2. See Creating the SRP Contract for more information.
Students working with faculty mentors who have UCLA Environment, Health & Safety chemical licenses must have completed the Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts class before enrolling in an SRP 99 course. If the Laboratory Safety course is required, students will see the following under their faculty mentor’s name when generating the SRP 99 contract in MyUCLA: “Safety Training: Proof of Completion of the Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC) course is required for participation in research with this mentor.” See Creating the SRP Contract for more information.
Note: In summer, students can enroll in Summer Session A for 6 weeks, Summer Session A for 10 weeks, or Summer Session C for 6 weeks. Students wishing to enroll in an SRP 99 for the whole summer should choose the 10-week option; they cannot enroll in both summer sessions A and C for 6 weeks. Deadlines for summer SRP 99 contracts are 4:30 p.m. of the second week of each session. Summer SRP 99 units do not carry a course fee; students only enrolling in SRP units during the summer will only pay the campus fees. Click here for current rates.

Grading

SRP 99 is a P/NP contract course, and the course requirements are determined by the faculty mentor. At the end of the quarter, the faculty mentor certifies that the contract has been completed and submits a grade. Grades are submitted by the faculty mentor within the last week of the quarter after final exams.

Transcripts

Students’ transcripts will read as follows: Course 99 – Student Research. The number of units listed on the transcript is set by the SRP 99 contract (see above).

Creating the SRP 99 Contract

Creating an SRP 99 Contract and Enrolling in an SRP 99 Contract Course

Step 1: Create an SRP 99 contract through the following steps:

Log in to MyUCLA
Click on “Contract Courses,” which is under the “Classes” tab.
Under “My Contract Courses” click on “Submit a new contract.”
Select year and term.
Choose “Student Research Program (SRP) – 99.”
Select the “Subject Area” for your SRP. (The subject area is the same as your faculty mentor’s department.)
Choose faculty mentor and select number of units. If your faculty mentor is not listed in the system: first double-check that you are looking in the correct department. If you still do not see your mentor listed, email our office at urhass@college.ucla.edu.
Verify whether you need to submit proof of completion of the Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts course. If your faculty mentor has a UCLA Environment, Health & Safety chemical license, you must complete the Laboratory Safety class before enrolling in an SRP 99 course. If the Laboratory Safety course is required, you will see the following under your faculty mentor’s name on the SRP 99 contract: “Safety Training: Proof of Completion of the Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC) course is required for participation in research with this mentor.” During the process of creating a contract, MyUCLA will electronically verify the student’s Lab Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC) training status. Students who have satisfied the training requirement will be allowed to create their contracts normally and their safety training status will be displayed on the contract. Students who have not satisfied the training requirement will be given a link to safety training website and will not be allowed create a contract until their safety training requirement has been verified. In most cases, verification can be done in real-time, but students will be warned that it may take up to 24 hours to verify their status after they have completed the safety training class.
In the “My Research Plan” section, include: your research question or hypothesis, your approach or methodology, and the significance of the project. Aim for 3-5 sentences. See the sample “My Research Plan” below.
- “My Research Plan” example: My research investigates how fan fiction has influenced the modern publishing industry. I examine the online trajectories of three novels that were ultimately published on Amazon.com’s Kindle Words service. This project will document the publishing history of these three as-yet-overlooked novels while analyzing the publishing industry’s attempts to impose standards on the emerging genre.

Have your faculty mentor sign the contract. SRP 99 contracts must be physically or electronically signed. Faculty who are not able to physically or electronically sign contracts may email confirmation to the Undergraduate Research Center for Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at urhass@college.ucla.edu. The confirmation must include the student’s name, UID, and contract number.
SRP contracts are due Friday of second week at 4:30 p.m. to the Undergraduate Research Center on MyUCLA Message Center.

Step 2: Enroll in an SRP 99 contract through the following steps:

Submit SRP 99 contracts and Lab Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC) certification, if required, to the Undergraduate Research Centers using the MyUCLA Message Center. Please follow the instructions below to submit your contract via the MyUCLA Message Center.

Log in to MyUCLA.
Click on the yellow “Need Help?” button in the top right hand corner.
Click “Message Center.”
Click the green “Ask a Question” button.
Select “Topic” and type “Student Research Program” in the text field.
Type “SRP 99 Enrollment” in the Subject Line.
Attach a PDF or scan of your signed SRP 99 contract.
Click “Send.”
