The Undergraduate Research Center for the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences is committed to assisting our students with virtual support and resources.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research & Creative Activities has released the following information regarding on-campus undergraduate research activities during remote learning.

For undergraduate students, the following rules apply to those undergraduates being proposed for lab work under a faculty ROP. It does not apply to students who need to be in labs to complete lab work that is essential to finishing their degree (an explicit degree requirement (e.g. a capstone project) that cannot be completed remotely or delayed and would prevent a student from graduating).

  1. No new students will be allowed to begin on-site research either for credit or as an employee.
  2. No new volunteers.
  3. Undergraduates who are included on an already approved ROP and perform essential work on a faculty member’s research that cannot be done remotely are permitted as part of the essential workforce research or as an approved member of a COVID-19 research team listed on an approved current ROP.
  4. Students with prior research experience who are not included in an already approved ROP are not permitted to return to the lab for on-site work at this time.

We advise students and faculty to develop a fair plan moving forward, and have put together suggestions and resources for how faculty-mentored student research may be conducted off campus during the spring quarter. You may also consult our Tips on Managing Research Remotely, which compiles and summarizes tips from a survey of north campus undergraduates who conducted remote research in spring 2020.
